So, you’ve heard about having a list. Emailing your list and all the wonderful things that are going to happen to your business once you have an email list – but what the heck is it?
Can’t you just email people from your Gmail?
Sure – you totally can but there are a few cool tricks that email marketing services can do that Gmail can’t.

What Gmail can’t do

Gmail and other standard ways of sending emails can’t:
Tag people based on clicked links in emails
Send out emails in gorgeous branded templates to thousands of people
Send sequences (automations) of emails to people based while you sleep, drink tea or swim in the sea.
But, setting up your email marketing and growing a list is not all peaches and cream – I have to be honest with you – there’s quite a bit involved so that’s why I’m writing this blog series to help you get it all going.
And actually, in some cases I’ve recommended clients to stay with the Gmail approach because its intimate, personal and effective! You don’t HAVE to have an email list to have a successful business. But it can help you to automate some tasks in your business and free up some time.

What an email list is

An email list is:
A collection of email addresses and personal contact details people agree to give you so you can send them marketing communications.
A special use of email that allows you send information to many people at once
A way to build relationships with people who don’t know you so they can get to know you and possibly become clients one day.
An opportunity to sell your products and services to people who are interested in what you have to say and what you offer.
An account you open with an email marketing service like MailChimp, ActiveCampaign, ConvertKit etc that enables you to send marketing information to people who have given you permission to do so
A way to deliver a free eBook or video training series.

Some email list terminology

Subscriber: a person who has given you their email and other contact details based on the understanding that you will be sending them marketing information
Unsubscribe: when a person decided to stop receiving emails from
List: collection of contacts grouped according to your criteria
Campaign: the word often used by email services for a single email that gets sent out to a list or multiple lists
Opt-in: when someone agrees to be on your list as a subscriber; (also) a free gift given to new subscribers as an enticement to join an email list

Legal note for Australians

In Australia, it is necessary to get explicit permission from contacts to receive marketing materials from you.
So, for instance, if you have a list of client email addresses you can’t send them marketing emails unless they’ve opted-in. Opting in requires that you ask them if they would be willing to receive emails from you of a marketing nature and then they must click or tick a box to opt-in.
In the US they have an opt-out approach i.e. people are considered to be subscribed and willing simply by providing their emails and must click or tick a box to opt-out.
This is not the case in Australia.
People MUST opt-in.
Don’t worry, if you are using an email service like MailChimp, ActiveCampaign, AWeber or ConvertKit this process will be fulfilled by the robots/sign up workflow.
But you mustn’t send marketing emails to old clients unless they have given you permission.

What is it for

An email list is a way to send bulk emails to people with buttons, links, videos, blog previews, text, social media shares and more. You would have received them from large companies so you have been on the receiving end (probably way more than once).
It’s a way to have discussions, share information, position your self as an expert, give to your tribe, get more people viewing your videos, let people know about your services and products and any promotions you are having.
It’s also got a higher conversion rate than social media and that’s because people are already interested in you and your business by the time they sign up. They want to know more! Plus – you land right in their inbox – you don’t have to outsmart the Facebook algorithm just to get seen.
So you can go nuts and get free serving them beautifully and giving them some gold nuggets because these are your potential customers.

Now, how do you get one?
