Spoiler: I'm not following a YouTube monetisation strategy any more...

Let’s go back in time, to a point where I was coming back into my biz after 2 years working for an employer and 5 months waiting for the planets to align (Bridget: “Everything will take off in your business in May”, Me: grrr, fighting it, trying and not succeeding, taking it personally, giving up, resigning to a menopause sabbatical till May, when everything took off so easily).

I was feeling a bit untethered. I was trying to figure out where to put my energy for growth. I was analysing my existing audiences, dipping my toe back into social media and basically winging it.

All the time I’d been out of my business, a bunch of my YouTube videos were still getting regualr views. Long story short, I decided (with the help of ChatGPT) to try and get monetised on YouTube.

I made a podcast about it that you can listen to here:

I was pretty inspired, I had some mega moon where I made 3 freebies + a product, and I was all in on the project.

Chat GPT projected that it would take me 6-9 months to get monetised.

Once I was monetised, I ould expect around $50 a month which seemed ok at that time, especially if it’s one revenue stream among a few.

I was in a massive experiimental phase, trying Thermomix consulting, running retreats, doing some catering and just being open to life.

I created a couple of small ticket products, all the time working with ChatGPT’s tips and making a few sales. It felt ok.

Then I hit a bit of a wall.

I think it was a mix of:

  • being busy with other things
  • realism about the tiny amount of revenue for so much effort
  • feeling not-aligned with the content I was making

At this point I really thought I would ride this strategy out, and I made another podcast about how it was feeling. You can listen below:

What was so lovely was the encouragement I recieved from others in my industry and audience. Naw, so sweet.

Since then, I just haven’t felt excited about the strategy. I haven’t been able to muster it up.

Till this week.

I got a cold and just snuggled up with my airpods, my laptop and a hot water bottle.

Somehow, I ended up back in the George Kao course platform. Actually, I get his emails and he was sharing his Netcaring webinar recording.

Then I was back in the flow.

I was in George’s MasterHeart program a few years ago. I love his strategies so much I’ve taught them to my own clients. And it’s not just that I like his approach; it works!

So now I’m back to the content experiments George teaches in this blog post and I’m feeling energised.

So, what's the difference?

Maybe it’s a temporary dopamine hit and in 4 months I’ll be back in this same loop with some other inspiring story haha.

But what I think it really is, is that this approach to content creation:

  • lets me make content to my heart’s content rather than trying to make content to fit a strategy
  • creates space for me to explore any topic I like from my 2 branches, Women’s Business and Business Women or art if I like
  • is a no-pressure approach. The content should be light and experimental. The expectation is for it to flop. Such a relief.

OMG I just realised it's a full moon again haha

Maybe in a few weeks this excitement will have worn off so keep me accountable. Ask me how my content strategy is going <3
