I just did a Google search for “Marketing” because I had a hunch that when people think marketing they seem to think:
- social media
- advertising
- promotion
- selling
And its true…these are all part of marketing.
However, if you bring a product or service to a marketer and you haven’t done any market research, you are wasting everybody’s time and money.
Back to my Google search.
After scouring the whole images page on results for “marketing”, I only found 2 posts with the kind of custoner-centric approach I am endorsing here.
This one above allocates an entire quarter to the customer. Breakthrough!
Both of these model are hitting the mark: without potential client and past client Insights, generally, your big idea is going nowhere.
Now I know everyone loves that story about Henry Ford making something that people didn’t even know they wanted yet. The big “car success story” blah blah blah.
I can tell you for sure that is an exception rather than the rule.
It’s the same with your website…
When I’m helping someone build their site and they ask me what I think it should say:
If I’m not the target market then my opinion is worth nada!
There are no ways around this one people…
And I feel your pain.
Getting me to do market research is ridiculously hard. I feel like I’m in a boxing match with excuses, limiting beliefs and flat out lies to myself about how bad it is. And then I actually do it and fall smack bang back in love with my business and my offers.
Making offers in 2021 has been completely vitalised for me through having market research conversations.
I recommend market research so highly, and in fact I’m considering making it mandatory for my clients…
What do you think?
When did you last ask your audience?
Ask yours now with my market research template. Make a copy here:
“I pay my respects and acknowledge the people of the Yuin Nation, traditional custodians of the land on which I live and work. I also pay respect to all Elders — past, present and future.”
Do you want to talk to me about how to do market research for your new course idea?
