This guide came about thanks to a great question from Leesa. She wanted to know how to transform her Word docs into digital products like PDF’s, workbooks and worksheets.
What started as a simple answer turned into quite an adventure! As I dug into this topic, I discovered that the digital landscape has changed quite a bit. The tools and methods we used to rely on have evolved. Through my research, I learned so much more than I expected, and I’m excited to share this process.
The methods I’ll show you are up-to-date and practical, perfect for anyone looking to transform their documents into digital products.

Understanding Digital Product Delivery
Let me walk you through the three ways to turn your Word documents into digital products:
The Three Methods
- Using Google Docs – A simple but effective approach
- Using Canva’s workbook templates
- Using Canva’s docs feature
With all three of these methods, you’re going to end up with an item that is essentially a link that you share with people once they’ve paid.
How Digital Product Delivery Works
When someone buys your digital product, they’ll get access through a link. Here’s what happens:
- A customer visits your website
- They pay for your workbook or product
- You share a link where they can download the materials
Storage and Sharing Options
You have several choices for storing and sharing your products:
- Google Drive: A reliable storage space that’s both private and shareable
- WordPress Website: Perfect if you have your own site
- Other Platforms: Various options depending on your needs
A Note About Security
While we can’t completely prevent sharing, here are some approaches:
- Kindly ask customers not to share links
- Create a referral program to encourage proper purchases
- Offer incentives for legitimate sales
Remember, even fancy course platforms can’t fully prevent sharing. Focus on creating value that makes people want to support your work properly.
Method 1: Using Google Docs for Digital Products
This digital delivery method is just as legitimate as any other. Don’t feel like you need expensive platforms – many successful coaches and mentors use simple file sharing through Google Drive or similar services.
My business mentor, George Kao, taught me this method where you use a Google Doc as the course content.
This is a great method, and I’ve done plenty of paid work with mentors, coaches. I’ve bought things on Etsy all to do with files in Google Drive.
Getting Started with Google Docs
Google Docs offers a simple but powerful way to deliver your digital products. Here’s how to make the most of it:
Using Headings for Easy Navigation
- Set up your document with proper heading levels (H1, H2, etc.)
- This creates an automatic outline on the left side
- Makes it easy for users to jump between sections
- Works similar to Word and Pages on Mac
Creating Internal Links
- Use headings to create anchor points
- Copy the unique heading URL
- Create links within your document
- Let users jump directly to specific sections
Setting Up Sharing Permissions
- Click the “Share” button
- Change access from “Restricted” to “Anyone with the link”
- Set permission level to “Commenter”
- Copy the sharing link for distribution
Enabling Interactive Learning
- Users can highlight text to add comments
- Click the comment icon to ask questions
- You’ll receive email notifications for new comments
- Respond to comments to provide feedback
Benefits of Using Google Docs
- Free to use
- Perfect for testing course ideas
- Great for beta versions
- Highly interactive
- Easy to update and maintain
- Allows direct communication with participants
When to Use This Method
- Testing new course concepts
- Running beta programs
- Creating interactive workbooks
- Need for direct feedback
- Working with a limited budget
- Want a simple delivery method
This method works especially well when you’re just starting out or testing a new product. It’s a cost-effective way to deliver content while maintaining good interaction with your customers.
Method 2: Creating Workbooks with Canva Templates
When to Use Canva Templates
Canva templates work best for:
- Short documents and worksheets
- Materials that are just a few pages long
- Projects where visual appeal is important
- Content that doesn’t require heavy text
Finding the Perfect Template
- Go to Canva’s home page
- Click on “Templates” in the search bar
- Type “workbook” in the search field
- Browse through the professionally designed options
- Look for templates with:
- Cohesive color schemes
- Matching fonts
- Fillable components
- Suitable layouts for your content
Customizing Your Template
- Start with Brand Colors and Fonts
- Change text to your brand fonts (like Montserrat or Laura)
- Use the “Change all” option to update similar elements
- Adjust brand colors throughout the document
- Check for any formatting issues after font changes
- Adjust Images and Icons
- Click on existing images to replace them
- Upload your own images
- Delete or swap out icons as needed
- Maintain the design’s visual balance
Design Tips
- Respect the Template Structure
- Keep text blocks similar in size to the original
- Don’t overcrowd spaces with too much content
- Maintain white space for readability
- Layout Adjustments
- Move elements if they overlap after font changes
- Adjust font sizes when needed
- Consider reducing elements if you need more space for text
- Keep the overall design clean and organized
Important Considerations
- Time investment: Be realistic about the effort needed for larger documents
- Content balance: This method works best when you need a good mix of text and visual elements
- Design consistency: Stick to your brand elements while maintaining the template’s professional look
- File size: Consider how many pages you’ll need to convert
Remember, while this method creates beautiful results, it might not be the best choice for very large documents. For those cases, consider using the third method we’ll discuss later.

Hey:
I used a tiny bit of AI help to create this post. I’m experimenting with it through a tool called Video to Page. This transcribes my video and then I choose which kind of content to turn it into. This time I chose to make a how-to guide. I also let it choose the title of the blog for me.
I feel like this one is very dot point heavy but otherwise it’s not too bad. I really like the title it chose. I struggle with titles.
What do you think?
